Ernest Hemingway 1899 - 1961 was a volunteer ambulance driver with the Italian Army on the Austrian front in World War I. He was a big-game hunter, journalist, best-selling novelist and nonfiction writer.

Hemingway's use of simple declarative sentences changed the way Americans wrote. His consistent themes of personal courage and determination contributed to the American ideals in our culture.
