Timescope - Questions from Our Cultural History

Question: What famous New York city skyscraper, reaching 102 stories, was built in 1931?

Answer: The Empire State Building

Excavation of the site began on January 22, 1930. There was fierce competition about what building would be the world's tallest building at that time.

The construction took only 410 days.

When it was dedicated on May 1, 1931, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world at 1,250 feet tall.

The spire on top was designed to be a mooring for dirigibles. There is an observation deck on the 86th floor which is open daily.

The Empire State Building figured prominently in the first King Kong movie starring Fay Wray and there is a permanent exhibit in the lobby commemorating that film.
